Abstract
The article discuses bank failures and financial crisis in the economic history of antebellum U.S. society. The author reflects on the distribution of credit the resulting value of economic expansion and productive capacity. Other topics include confidence in banking, the contributions of banks to economic decline in times of crisis, and the moral imperative of debts.
