Abstract

Traveling away from the controlled environment of home can be somewhat overwhelming to a patient with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), regardless if the purpose of travel is for work, studies, or leisure. Research has shown that having Crohn’s disease or colitis does prevent people from traveling, including limitations on the amount of travel and the destination, mainly due to concerns about access to health care, the availability of medications, and concerns about sanitation in the travel destination.1 However, research has shown that patients do not have adequate knowledge and are likely to travel without adequate insurance or without proper advice regarding immunizations.2 Likewise, many gastroenterologists may not feel confident to provide comprehensive pre-travel consultations to their patients.3 Planning ahead and ensuring patients are adequately advised and educated can make travel safer and enjoyable.
