Abstract
German South West Africa, April 1906: At the Swakopmund Imperial District Office an anonymous letter is received accusing a certain Mr. Mande of murdering his wife with poison. The acting District Officer immediately initiates a criminal investigation that lasts for several months. This paper provides detailed insights into the kind of approach employed by the German colonial authorities to the Mande case and examines Mandc's relationship with one of the most notorious and scrupulous pimps of his time who had arrived at the German protectorate only a few months earlier, accompanied by various prostitutes. Legal files like the Max Mande File provide sources of valuable additional information for the contemporary postcolonial discourse.
