Abstract
The theory of contrast reduction by a planetary atmosphere has been applied to compute the visibility of patterns on the nucleus of Halley's comet from the Giotto spacecraft through the dusty coma of the comet. Even for an optical thickness as high as 2 some details may be seen on the surface of the nucleus.
