Abstract

Biopsy or autopsy specimens from 17 patients with collagen diseases were examined for the presence of virus like particles by electron microscopy. Myxovirus like particles were found in the cytoplasm of glomerular endothelial cells in all 13 renal samples obtained from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Similar particles were also found in capillary endothelial cells in the oral mucosa of a patient with Sjogren's disease and in a muscle biopsy taken from a patient with chronic dermatomyositis. Viruslike particles were also found in the cytoplasm of muscle cells taken from two other patients with dermatomyositis. However, these 2 patients suffered from the acute fulminant type of the disease and their viruslike particles resembled picornaviruses. The presence of these viruslike particles in all the tissues examined confirms previous observations and suggests that viruses play a role in the pathogenesis of the collagen diseases.
