Abstract

In this presentation a non-conventional approach to interval velocity analysis is suggested. The motivation for this study is based on the argument that when the subsurface structure is complex, velocity error cannot be related to a single parameter. The suggested analysis utilizes depth migrated gathers parameterized according to their structural characteristics. Through detailed analysis of 2D synthetic and real data examples, the influence of migration velocity errors on the correctness of the migrated multi-parameter gathers is demonstrated. A correctness criterion is also presented, along with some thoughts on how to apply the procedure is 3D.
