Abstract

We examined the possibility that in postmenopausal hyperlipidemic women receiving hormone replacement therapy, lipid and lipoprotein levels fluctuate because of the different effects of estrogen and progestogen. During three consecutive hormonal cycles, we assessed fasting lipid and lipoprotein levels in 36 postmenopausal hyperlipidemic women on conjugated estrogen plus medroxyprogesterone acetate. We found significant fluctuations in these levels, depending on the hormonal phase. On estrogen alone, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein levels were lower and high-density lipoproteins higher than during the combined estrogen-plus- progestogen phase.
