Vacuum-ultraviolet laser induced surface modification of fused and crystal quartz

Abstract

The vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) Raman laser was successfully used to change the surface refractive index of fused quartz without damage to the laser irradiated region. The relationship between refractive index, color center, chemical structure, and surface morphology changes of fused and crystal quartz is reported. XPS analysis revealed that Si-O bonds were photo-dissociated and SiOx was created by VUV laser irradiation.
