Abstract

The nonlinear phase noise, caused by the combination of amplifier ASE and fiber nonlinearities, limits the performance of phase-modulated systems. The effect of such noise was exhibited experimentally and in simulations. However, no analytical model was provided to analyze the statistics of this nonlinear noise as yet. This paper anlyzes the nonlinear phase noise analytically, compares the results to previously reported experimental results, and provide a method for calculating the BER in DPSK systems limited by the phase noise that was generated by the optical nonlinearity.
