Abstract
Three cases of carcinoma of the colon were found among 504 Jewish patients with ulcerative colitis in the Tel Aviv area. The majority of cases in this series had substantial or universal involvement of the colon and the length of follow up was 1 to 46 yr. The mean follow up was 7.54 yr; more than 100 cases were followed for more than 12 yr. The expected incidence of carcinoma of the colon for a matched group of the general population would be 0.9 cases. This 0.6% incidence of carcinoma of the colon in ulcerative colitis is considerably lower than that usually found in Europe or the United States. A similarly low incidence was reported from Czechoslovakia. The incidence of malignant degeneration in ulcerative colitis may vary in different population groups.
