Abstract

We utilized tunable dye lasers to monitor the two-photon absorption spectra of crystalline anthracene and of the anthracene molecule in solution in the energy range 28800·-42000 cm-1. Four molecular states corresponding to the 1B-3u (symmetry forbidden) and to the 1B+1g, 1B-1g and 1A-1g (symmetry allowed) configurations were identified by two-photon spectroscopy, and their relation to the crystal states was considered.
