Abstract

The diagnosis of retained products of conception in a woman with postpartum or postabortion bleeding presents a major clinical challenge. Ultrasonographic examination may serve as a useful tool for the detection of such tissue but its accuracy has yet to be established. Saline infusion sonohysterography is a simple technique for enhanced transvaginal sonographic imaging of the endometrial cavity by the instillation of saline into the uterine cavity while performing the ultrasonography. This technique was found to enhance the ability to diagnose retained products of conception. This is the first case in which trophoblastic tissue was evacuated under sonographic guidance while performing saline infusion sonohysterography.
