Abstract

The difference between the neutron and proton densities (ρn-ρp) and the excess neutron density ρexc are computed for several nuclei using the Hartree-Fock approximation. Large differences are found between these two types of densities for nuclei with a small neutron excess. The above densities are related to transition densities in charge exchange reactions leading to isobaric analog states. It is argued that ρexc is the density which should be used in the computation of the cross section for such reactions in nuclei with a small number of excess neutrons.
