N2 - Herpes simplex virus (HSV) eye infections are a major cause of corneal opacity and visual loss in developed countries. The successful management of HSV keratitis depends on clinical recognition of the specific tissue layers involved and the various immune components of the keratitis. Modulation of HSV ocular disease relies upon the appropriate application of antiviral and anti-inflammatory medications. The development of several antiviral drugs is discussed, and treatment outlines are given for infectious epithelial keratitis, neurotrophic keratopathy, and stromal keratitis.
