Abstract
This chapter provides a comprehensive examination of therapeutic ultrasound and its potential uses in treating a variety of medical conditions. By using focused ultrasound waves, therapeutic ultrasound can elicit bioeffects in a precise and targeted manner, with minimal or no side effects, making it a promising alternative or complement to traditional therapies. The chapter delves into the physical properties of ultrasound and its associated bioeffects. It also covers the regulations in place for medical ultrasound treatments. In particular, the chapter emphasizes the use of gas bubbles to enhance the bioeffects of therapeutic ultrasound and explores emerging applications of the technology. These include tumor ablation, brain therapy, drug and gene delivery, and bone healing. Moreover, the chapter highlights recent technological advancements that have further enhanced the efficacy of therapeutic ultrasound. It also discusses future directions and challenges in this rapidly evolving field. Overall, this chapter provides a thorough and insightful overview of therapeutic ultrasound and its vast potential for medical applications.
