The zoogeography of the birds and mammals of Israel

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Israel may be divided into 3 main biogeographical regions (Mediterranean, the steppic Irano-Turanian, and the arid Saharo-Arabian), in turn divisible into 11 subregions. The origins and distributions of the bird and mammal fauna are reviewed. Patterns of distribution are considered in relation to: latitudinal changes in species number; altitudinal zonation; vicarism; clinal variation in body size and proportions; sand-dwelling animals; and the NW extension of eremic elements. -P.J.Jarvis
