Abstract

We study polarization dependent loss (PDL) in optical communications systems. The degradation in the ultimate achievable performance is considered in terms of the reduction in channel capacity and quantified in terms of the equivalent reduction in signal to noise ratio (SNR). The analysis provides guidelines for the tolerable amounts of PDL in ultimately designed systems.
