Abstract

The paper offers a conceptual framework for the sociological study of refugees and other migrants. It is centred on the migrants and the social world in which they are embedded. The social world is the sum of all the migrants' relationships and of the forces impinging on them at any moment. It can be explored through the social networks of migrants and the changes they undergo during migration and resettlement. The argument is illustrated by examples taken from ethnographies of migration and social change.
