N2 - Arab anti-Zionism has shaped attitudes toward the Holocaust in Arab countries. During World War II, although many Egyptians opposed Nazism, most Iraqis, Syrians, and Palestinians were pro-Nazi. After 1948, all the Arabs were unable to sympathize with the Jews or recognize the Jewish tragedy since they were opposed to the establishment of the Jewish state, which was seen as the "solution" to the "Jewish problem". The Arabs felt that the Jews were the real "victors" in the war, having made cynical use of or invented the Holocaust. Both justification and denial of the Holocaust exist in the Arab world, where Israelis are branded as Nazis, the Arabs are considered the real victims, and antisemitic propaganda is used to delegitimize Israel and dehumanize Israelis. Presents viewpoints in various Arab countries, including the myth that the Jews collaborated with the Nazis in order to ensure the establishment of Israel. Contends that such views are harmful to the Middle East peace process, since each side must recognize the suffering of the other. Discusses, also, the overwhelming Arab support for Roger Garaudy, the French philosopher who converted to Islam in 1982 and was tried for Holocaust denial in 1998.
