Abstract
Halogen reactivity in various 5‐halomethylpyrimidines is ascribed to mesomeric electron transfer from the ring to the halomethyl group. In the more stable 6‐halomethylpyrimidines, electron abstraction from the ring is of an inductive nature. These effects are reflected in differences in the dissociation constants of corresponding members of the two series.
