N2 - This chapter discusses the contribution of the Hebrew Israeli theatre to the coexistence with Israeli Palestinians. Racial attitudes in Israeli society displayed by Jews towards Arabs have fluctuated in response to the political climate, especially in the last 20 years, following the second intifada of 2000-2004. Despite this the theatrical repertory shows that both its creators and audiences are opposed to these trends, more passively in mainstream theatre and more actively in the fringe, with public opposition to racial attitudes. By examining images of the Palestinian in Israeli theatre-which constitutes an artistic avant-garde that urges and demands that the conciliation process with the Palestinians start-the chapter argues that the image of the Palestinian responds to a wish to settle the political dispute, and a strong desire of part of the Jewish Israeli audience for conciliation with the Palestinian section of their population.
