Abstract

A long-term doctor-family relationship is described through Balint's construct of the 'mutual investment company,' and integrated with Engel's biopsychosocial model. The family physician's insights, feelings, and self- awareness during the ten years in which he accompanied this family become an important source for an understanding of the family system. The mutual growth of trust, knowledge, and satisfaction is disclosed, based on the continuous therapeutic relationship.
