The article focuses on the history of the Hotel Moderne in Harbin, China, from 1906 to 2011. Topics discussed include the design and construction of the hotel, its management under Russian owner Iosif Kaspe, and its reconstruction after it became Chinese property in 1946. The establishment's name etymology and a comparison with colonial Shanghai-located hotels are also discussed.
