Abstract
The equations governing stationary convection in an enclosed core in the presence of a uniform magnetic field lead to an eigenvalue problem for the rate of heat generation in the core. The critical character of the first eigenvalue is brought out by proving that it distinguishes between stable and unstable ordinary convection. Rayleigh numbers for various intensities of the uniform magnetic field are obtained by Ritz's method.
