Abstract
IBoT 1.30+ Bo 8141 is a small tablet with a great impact. It contains perhaps the most quintessential statement on the sacred foundations of Hittite kingship and is therefore cited in almost every study on the Hittite ideology of kingship. It was even assigned a special catalogue number by Laroche (CTH 821). In the present essay, I will take a closer look at some of the key statements of the recitation and attempt to contextualize them in two distinct historical moments, separated by almost three centuries: At first, when the recitation was originally performed during the earlier phases of the Old Hittite kingdom, before the town was lost to the Kaška, and then later after Nerik was liberated by Ḫattušili ‘III’, towards the end of the Hittite Empire, when many of the ancient Nerik texts were copied.
