Abstract
The construction of family in each author's work does not reflect historical accuracy but aesthetic need. For Malory, the family provides the source of political antagonism and narrative tension that invigorates the romance. For Chrétien, the family provides an ideal alternative to chivalric adventurism that deconstructs the ideal of romance. (JM).
