Google Transparency Project Survey106 identified 330 scientific papers published between 2005 and 2017 on public policy topics in approaches favouring the interests of the company that funded them in some way. From these, in 179 (54%) of the cases the funding was direct, and in 151 (46%), it was indirect. In 65%, the financial support was not mentioned by the authors of the academic papers. Among the subjects addressed were issues directly related to the regulation of the platform’s activities, such as antitrust, privacy, network neutrality, patents and copyright. Competition was the most recurrent theme, with 113 studies. The authors of the survey point to a coincidence of searches on the subject in years during which Google was under investigation about its monopoly power, as in 2012.107 The authors recognize works in peer-reviewed journals with appropriate methodologies, but, also, several cases published in spaces that are not peer-reviewed and without any scientific rigor.
