N2 - The concepts related to the realization of ultra-fast optical switches, to be used in the next generation optical networks are discussed. The switch offers multicast and ultra-fast variable optical attenuation (VOA) capabilities, yielding high functionality. The results showed that the optical switches had a potentially small footprint, low cross-talk, low insertion-loss and high switching speed.
