The domestic power struggle and the fourth Iranian Majlis elections

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The article aims at analyzing the 1992 Iranian Majlis elections: their background, conduct and results. By so doing, it also attempts to shed additional light on some other significant questions regarding the Iranian current situation, mainly: the nature and depth of domestic rivalries; the political modus operandi of the Islamic regime; and the challenges facing the regime after 13 years of Islamic rule. Although the contest was officially fought between the two competing associations of combatant clerics, it was much wider in scope. In a way it was a struggle between two trends: Rafsanjani against his rival; pragmatism versus radicalism; the government against its critics; the practical interests of the state versus the ideology of the revolution. The radicals were defeated in this contest. Clearly, the author argues, Rafsanjani's success is not divorced of serious challenges. The elections pointed not only to the depth of domestic rivalries, but also to the centrality of social and economic problems. -from Author
