Abstract
We investigate the possibility that the12C+12C reaction proceeds, at low energies (relevant to the carbon burning phase), via direct transfer of an α-particle. The exact results depend on the precise value of certain spectroscopic factors, which are, as yet, unknown. A few features of the direct transfer mechanism are emphasized, which might be useful in directing attention to cases where direct transfer is of importance for astrophysical reactions.
