Abstract

The reaction between photochemically generated ion pair, H+ and excited anion, was monitored by picosecond fluorescence dynamics. The reaction measured in bulk water was compared with that proceeding inside specific binding sites of two proteins, apomyoglobin and the anionic specific channel, porine of E. coli. The results indicate that the water in the sites deviates markedly from the liquid state in the bulk, having a lower dielectric constant and a smaller diffusivity of proton. Both terms point to a partial ordering of the water in the immediate vicinity of a protein.
