Abstract

The second order wave resistance of an arbitrary distribution of sources, representing a thin symmetrical two-dimensional body, is derived in a closed analytical form. The result is applied to a few shapes: an isolated source representing semi-infinite blunt body, an open body with a leading edge of a fine shape and a closed body generated by a source and a sink. In each case the first order wave resistance as well as the body and free-surface second order corrections are derived separately. The relevance of the results to ship wave resistance is discussed in qualitative terms.
