Abstract

In this paper we present the results of an experimental study of laser action and of spontaneous and stimulated emissions of 4-methylumbelliferone (4MU) solutions excited by the second harmonic of a Q switched ruby laser. Two singly and one doubly protonated exciplexes of 4MU have been identified and an intramolecular interconversion mechanism between the two singly protonated exciplexes is proposed. Two simultaneous laser actions have been observed and their relative intensities can be controlled by chemical (concentration) and physical (pumping power) means.
