Abstract

Rabbits and guinea pigs were successfully immunized to whole extracts of male and female mosquitoes (Culex pipiens molestus) and their sera were tested by the following methods: Hemagglutination, Inhibition of Hemagglutination, Passive Cutaneous Anaphylaxis, Agar-gel Double Diffusion and Immunoelectrophoresis. Detectable antibody levels were revealed in the immune sera by all the enumerated tests. Results of agar-gel diffusion and immuno-electrophoresis indicated that there are at least 4 and possibly 6 antigenic fractions in common to the male and female mosquitoes, all of which elicit precipitating antibodies traceable to the IgG fraction in the sera of immunized animals.
