Abstract

We derive a method for evaluating the distribution of the phase noise in phase and differential phase modulated systems. The method considers both SPM and XPM induced phase noise and accounts for fiber dispersion. The noise distribution can be used to estimate arbitrarily small bit-error rates for PSK and DPSK systems. The theoretical analysis agrees with Monte Carlo simulations of WDM systems.
