Spontaneous pattern formation with incoherent white light

Abstract

The modulation instability and spontaneous pattern formation with incoherent white light emitted from an incandescent light bulb were investigated. For the study, an incandescent light bulb was used as a light source, emitting a white light beam with a wide temporal spectrum. It was suggested that the temporal spectrum of the evolving perturbation self-adjusts to match the collective pattern formation phenomenon. It was also suggested that similar behavior may be found in various physical wave systems, where nonlinearity interplays with random statistics.
