Abstract

We have included accelerated ion pitch angle scattering and magnetic mirroring in our Monte Carlo programs for neutron production in solar flare magnetic loops, and we have thoroughly updated the neutron production kinematics and cross sections used in these programs. We are now making new calculations to explore the effects of flare-accelerated ion pitch angle scattering on the angular and temporal dependence of the escaping neutron spectra. These calculated spectra can be directly compared with the new direct measurements by COMPTEL of the time dependent spectra of flare neutrons to determine both the energy spectrum and the effective pitch angle scattering of the accelerated ions in the flares.
