Abstract

34 chronic schizophrenic patients were investigated in sleep laboratory during two consecutive nights. The polysomnography of the second night was used for the analysis of sleep structure. According to the ratio of positive and negative symptoms (PANSS), two groups of patients have been selected: Group I - positive/negative ratio is higher than 1; Group II - positive/ negative ratio is lower than 0.5. Group II is characterized by the increased REM sleep percentage, although REM sleep latency is similar in both groups. The relationships between positive vs. negative symptoms and REM sleep variables are discussed in the context of search activity concept.
