Abstract

The single-particle structure in 209Bi and 209Pb is studied using the particle-core coupling model. The 4+ core excitation of 208Pb is found to be important for splitting the 3p 1 2 single-proton state, and this explains the strong 3.64 and 4.43 MeV levels in 209Bi.
