Abstract

THE HISTORICAL MEMORY OF NATIONS AND PEOPLES tends to be short. Ben-Gurion, however, has been accorded a well-preserved niche in Israeli collective memory, being inseparable from the foundation myth of the state. Nevertheless, it is doubtful that the name of one of the greatest of leaders to emerge in American Jewry, Abba Hillel Silver, is sustained in the collective memory of modern American Jews. Does this reflect a certain paucity of historical consciousness among American Jews? In this paper, I will contend that the oblivion into which Silver has fallen is the result of his particular mode of leadership, compared with that of BenGurion.
