Abstract

We build an evolution equation to describe the changes in burning velocity of a non-adiabatic plane flame when a pulsating instability appears in near-limit conditions. Non-linear oscillations are obtained, and are found to correspond to a subcritical bifurcation to an unstable limit cycle. Accordingly, owing to the instability, quenching occurs for weaker heat losses than for steady flames, abruptly.
