Abstract

To the Editor: Törnberg et al. (Dec. 25 issue)1 indicated that men with serum cholesterol levels under 225 mg per deciliter are at a relatively reduced risk of colon cancer, although no protection from rectal cancer was found. In 1963 we measured the level of total cholesterol and high-density-lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in the serum of 9902 municipal employees and 6562 male civil servants.2 Cancer mortality was ascertained by matching with the Israeli National Mortality Registry, as well as by date of diagnosis, anatomical site, and morphology from the population-based Israeli Cancer Registry.3 Histologic confirmation at biopsy, surgery, or autopsy was….
