Abstract
The semiquantitative determination of albumin and the investigation of lactase activity were carried out in meconium of 13,462 newborns (included 210 preterm and small-for-date babies) of the district of Rostock. Three children were found with cystic fibrosis, but in one case there was a false-negative result. Combining both these methods results in a decrease of samples being suspected of cystic fibrosis (4% to 0.7%). Preterm and small-for-date babies showed a markedly higher percentage of suspect test results when combining both methods (5%).
