Abstract
Autoimmune diseases result from the loss of tolerance to self-tissues. Large strides have been made in elucidating the complex immunologic background of such diseases. The interplay of genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors shifted our understanding of disease etiopathogenesis. The seasonal variation of various environmental factors is demonstrated to play a contributory role in disease induction and progression. Such factors include vitamin D, ultraviolet radiation, melatonin, and infections. In this chapter, the effect of seasonality on autoimmune diseases is discussed. The consideration of such factors provides an avenue for further research into new treatment and preventive measures.
