Abstract

The results of screening for glaucoma and impaired vision in 1000 elderly persons are presented. A high prevalence of glaucoma was found (3.9%), of which 0.4% was diagnosed on screening. 12% were found to be practically blind in one of both eyes, of whom 3.1% had curable blindness. It is very important to establish a preventive ophthalmology service for the elderly to enable some of them to regain their sight and fulfill their daily duties.
