Schlüssel der Erinnerung: Deutsche Geschichten aus Kinderbüchern

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

Examines the treatment of the Nazi period in German juvenile literature, using as examples Klaus Kordon's picture book "Die Lisa" and prefaces to other children's books which contain explanations of their intentions. Notes that the Germans are usually represented as powerless and passive subjects of Nazi rule (which they inwardly oppose); the Jews are outsiders, and their characterization is superficial and stereotypical; the suffering of the Jews is played down and that of the Germans emphasized; the guilt is Hitler's and not the German people's; and the moral is not so much to deal with past guilt as to draw universal lessons for the future.
