Rudolf's Journey: Art Patronage and Politics in the St. Theobald Minster in Thann.

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The writer interprets the elaborate depiction of the Journey of the Magi on the Nativity Portal of the west facade of the St Theobald Minster in Thann, Germany, as a reflection of the patronage and politics of Rudolf IV of Habsburg. He argues that the image of the Magi was used to validate royal status and that the depcition of the Magi's journey thus conveyed Rudolf's legitimate claim to Germany's throne, his ambition to establish a Habsburg kingship on Lombard lands, and his wish to emulate the art and rituals of the Visconti's Milanese court.
