N2 - Locating the mental foramen in periapical radiographs is of great clinical importance. One thousand full-mouth intraoral radiographs were examined, and the location of the mental foramen in both the horizontal and the vertical planes was registered. In the horizontal plane 70 per cent of the mental foramina were found to be located between the two premolars, and 22 per cent were in the apical area of the premolars. In the vertical plane the highest percentage of mental foramina was found to be located superior to the level of the apices of the premolars.
