Abstract

Purpose. To study the results of combined PTK and PRK in ayopic pat lent siith recurrent corneal erosion. Methods. PRK was in it tally perfor ned in 1 o eyes vit the VTSX 20/20 laser at a central C.O im zone, following toial epithelial scraping. Subsequently confluent 3-0 m:n zones of PTK were ablated at a depth of û. 0 microns, surround ing the zone of PRK. Fo]low-up pariod ranged from 20 to ]k months. Re su It- s. There was a :7>ar.:c;! improvement of symptoms and no recurrence of corneal erosion. Vi sual acuity ( VA) following treat-.ient improved slowly, with a final uncorrected VA r an g; iig between 2J/30 and 20/10. A final myopic spherical equivalent T -l.OD wa?i found in 14 of 1 o -'yes. Conclusions. A combination of PRK and PTK is effective in allovi at i on of symptoms and prevent ion of recurrence of cornea 1 erosi on. It is suggested that recurrent cornea1 erosion is a diffuse disease and tha extensive esc imer laser ablation is required to prevent recurrence.
