Abstract

We analyzed data from 16,648 postpartum interviews with women who delivered at the three largest obsteric units in Jerusalem. An analysis of 3,676 singleton births to women with a history of prior spontaneous abortion showed a significantly higher incidence of first trimester bleeding, cesarean section and obstetrical intervention during the third stage of labor. After adjustment for possible confounding factors, such as maternal age, education, marital status, parity and smoking habits, by multiple regression analysis, the apparent excess of stillbirths among mothers with a history of spontaneous abortion was found to be due to an unfavorable distribution of these variables. Preterm deliveries, however, were significantly associated with previous spontaneous abortions.
